Adult Adoptions

Adult individuals (over the age of 18) may be adopted after giving written consent to the adoption. This type of adoption is helpful to change the status of a stepparent to a legal parent once a child reaches the age of 18. However, it is not limited to stepparent relationships. The adoption action is filed with the Superior Court in the county in which either the adult to be adopted resides or the individual seeking to adopt the adult resides. The name of the adopted adult can be changed as part of this process. In an adult adoption, no notice needs to be provided to the biological parent(s).
