What are the costs of adopting a child?

Sometimes, potential parents are not able to have a biological child due to medical or infertility reasons or they choose to open their home to a child in need through the process of adoption. Adoption is not an inexpensive process. It is important to be aware of the costs you may incur if you choose to adopt a child.

What is adoption?

Adoption is the process through which a child’s biological parents’ rights are terminated through the court system, and the child’s adoptive parents assume all legal rights and obligations of parenthood.

You can adopt in the United States from the foster care system, a licensed child-placing agency or privately or you can pursue international adoption. Adoption is a wonderful way for you to open your home to a child in need and to alleviate some of the pressure on our nation’s overburdened foster care system.

How much can adoption cost?

While it is a wonderful way to grow a family, adoption can be costly. It is estimated that if an adoption of an infant through a licensed agency, you could spend anywhere from $25,000 to $45,000.  If you adopt privately through your own networking, your fees will depend on the facts of the potential situation. If you adopt through the foster care system and your child is eligible for adoption assistance, you may not incur any fees. An international adoption can be more expensive.

Expenses can include:

  • Home study and post-placement supervision fee
  • Document preparation expenses
  • Agency and legal fees
  • Networking expenses
  • Birth mother counseling and living expenses
  • Travel expenses
  • Court costs

There is a federal adoption tax credit that may assist with the adoption expenses. The costs can also be reduced or eliminated by adopting through the foster care system.

The adoption process can take time to complete. If you are interested in adopting an infant, there could be a wait time of anywhere from six months to three years or more.
